的re are seven required courses for the major:

Additional Information 和 Department 政策

• Economic courses numbered 1000 to 1099 (with the exception of 经济1050 Principles of 微观经济学 和 定量推理) do not serve 作为先决条件 for higher-level courses.
• An independent study can be used to satisfy no more than one major 要求; an intermediate independent study can satisfy a 2000-level elective, or an advanced independent study can satisfy a 3000-level non-seminar.
• 类似的, an independent study can be used to satisfy no more than one elective course 要求 in either the economics minor or the economics 和 金融 minor. 
• To fulfill major or minor 要求s, courses must be taken for letter grades 和 a C- or better must be earned.

• Any statistics course taken to satisfy a 要求 for a non-economics major may double-count towards an economics minor. 
• Students who aspire to advanced work in economics, e.g., an honors thesis 和/or graduate study in a discipline related to economics, are strongly encouraged to master multivariate calculus (数学1800 多变量微积分)和线性代数(数学2000 线性代数)在他们的职业生涯早期. • Students who do honors enroll in ECON 4050 和 then ECON 4051 the following semester. However, a successfully completed honor's project is only worth one 3000-level non-seminar credit.

Advanced Placement/International Baccalaureate (AP/IB)

• Students who received a score of four or five on the 微观经济学 AP exam are eligible to receive credit for 经济1101 Principles of 微观经济学. Any credit awarded for the 微观经济学 AP exam will be removed from the student's record if the student elects to take 经济1050 Principles of 微观经济学 和 定量推理 or 经济1101 Principles of 微观经济学. 
• Students who received a score of four or five on the 宏观经济学 AP exam are eligible to receive credit for 经济1102 Principles of 宏观经济学. Any credit awarded for the 宏观经济学 AP exam will be removed from the student's record is the student elects to take 经济1102 Principles of 宏观经济学. 
• Students who received a minimum score of six on the 经济学 IB exam (HL) are eligible to receive one general college credit 和 placement into courses requiring either 经济1101 Principles of 微观经济学 or 经济1102 Principles of 宏观经济学. Any credit awarded for the 经济学 IB exam (HL) will be removed from the student's record if the student elects to take 经济1050 Principles of 微观经济学 和 定量推理 or 经济1101 Principles of 微观经济学 or 经济1102 Principles of 宏观经济学.
• Students who received a score of four or five on the 统计数据 AP exam have the option to use that score to satisfy the statistics 要求 for either of the economics minors but not for the major. 
• In order to receive credit for Advanced Placements/International Baccalaureate work, students must have their scores officially reported to the Office of the Registrar by the end of their sophomore year at Bowdoin.

Information for Incoming Students

经济学 addresses the functioning of economic institutions (i.e., 金融市场, 劳动力市场, 公司, 政府机构), current policy issues: determinants of the pace 和 nature of economic development; the allocation of health-care services; impacts of urban policy 和 the design of cities; the advantages 和 disadvantages of government spending 和 debt; the tendency toward poverty 和 its alleviation; human impacts on the environment 和 ways of addressing them; environmental justice; the effects of globalization 和 technological change on various groups across society; arguments for 和 against deregulation; the economics of racial 和 gender injustice, 等. 的 major is a useful preparation for work in law, 工商管理, 金融, 公共管理, 医学, 环境政策, 教育, 农业工作, 计算机科学, 非营利组织的工作, 还有很多其他领域. Students interested in graduate school in law, 业务, 金融, 数据科学, 公共政策, 公共卫生, economics will also find the major great preparation. 

In fall 2024 the economics department is offering one other course designed for first years. This course will provide first-year students an alternative entryway into the discipline: 经济1013 道德经济.

的 economics department provides an initial course placement for all new students, based on each student’s responses to the math/economics questionnaire, quantitative skills assessment tool, any officially submitted AP information. Based on this information, students are placed in one of the following gateway courses for 经济学:

• 经济1050 Principles of 微观经济学 和 定量推理
• 经济1101 Principles of 微观经济学
• 经济1102 Principles of 宏观经济学
• or a 2000-level elective of their choosing

Students who have questions about their placement, or who wish to register for a first economics course that is different from their original placement, should email the chair of the 经济学 department. If students have not officially submitted AP/IB scores, then that information was not considered 和 their placement may need to be adjusted.

• 经济1101 Principles of 微观经济学 has multiple sections offered each semester 和 is the st和ard gateway course into the department. 经济1101 Principles of 微观经济学 serves 作为 经济1102 Principles of 宏观经济学 和 several additional 2000 level electives.
• 经济1050 Principles of 微观经济学 和 定量推理 covers all the material in 经济1101 Principles of 微观经济学 in a more supported 定量推理 (QR) environment that requires an additional weekly hour-long lab session. Multiple lab session times will be available to students enrolled in 经济1050 Principles of 微观经济学 和 定量推理 和 will be determined after registration. 经济1050 Principles of 微观经济学 和 定量推理 also serves 作为 经济1102 Principles of 宏观经济学 和 several additional 2000 level electives.
  • In academic year 2024-2025, 经济1050 Principles of 微观经济学 和 定量推理 will be taught 在春天. 学生被安排在 经济1050 Principles of 微观经济学 和 定量推理 who are interested in majoring in economics should be assured that it is not a problem to wait until the spring to begin taking economics classes 和 are encouraged to consider taking 数学1050 定量推理 在秋天.

    • Students who received the "2000-level elective" placement (those students with 4's or 5's in both AP Micro 和 AP Macro or a 6+ on High Level IB economics exam) 和 want to get started right away with economics should consider one of the following fall 2024 electives as appropriate places to begin: 经济1099 Using “Big Data” to Investigate 和 Suggest Solutions to Economic 和 Social Problems, 经济2001 经济政策, 经济2225 Artificial Intelligence 和 经济学, or 经济2238 Eatconomics: 的 Economic Analysis of the Food Industry.
      • With rare exceptions, students wishing to start immediately with 经济2555 微观经济学  or 经济2556 宏观经济学 or 经济2557 经济统计数据 should wait until the spring term. Students seeking that exception should see the chair of the 经济学 department.
      • Students should be aware that any credit awarded for AP/IB scores in economics will be removed from their record if they elect to take a lower-level course. For more details, see the department's AP/IB policy above.
